Some Information about Canadian Families

Learn English and stay with a family in Toronto.

Toronto is a very multi-cultural city. Many immigrants have made Toronto their home. Therefore, our families differ in cultural backgrounds. Any person with a Canadian citizenship, whether they were born here, in China, Italy, The Philippines, Greece, Pakistan, India, and any other country, is considered Canadian. A Canadian homestay is great opportunity to multiply your cultural experience. Husbands and wives in Canada are equal. Women often work outside the home and housework is often shared between husband, wife and other household members. Don’t be surprised if you see your Host Father cooking supper. This is quite common in a Canadian household. Most Canadians do not smoke in their homes. If you are a smoker, you may need to go outside to smoke.

In Homestay you are welcomed as a member of your Host Family. Your family will make sure you are comfortable, help you settle in, serve you nutritious meals, involve you in family activities, make you feel "at home". You have a responsibility to abide by the household rules and participate in keeping the house clean. You may be asked to help with tasks such as doing your own laundry (washing your own clothes), setting the table or washing the dishes. You will also need to keep your room clean and tidy.  GEOS Toronto Hosts normally have either one or two students in the home and never more than three. We do not mix genders in homestay.

Locations

Toronto is a very wide city. The average commute time for a Torontonian is 79 minutes! However, most of GEOS Toronto host families are within 60 minutes of the school. All homes have good access to the Toronto Subway, Streetcar, and Bus system. Hosts will show the student how to use the Transit System and usually will bring the student to school on the first day.

Meals

There are two options for meal programs in GEOS Toronto homestay. You can opt for a three meal a day program or skip lunch on a two meal a day program. Dinner is usually eaten together with the family at 6 or 7 PM. Breakfast and lunch may be made for the student or the student may be provided with many options with which to make their own breakfast or lunch.
