March in Toronto brings the possibility of spring, which officially occurred on March 21st. The biggest celebration in March is St Patrick’s Day. This is an important cultural holiday because 14% of Canada’s population is of Irish heritage. St Patrick’s Day is a celebration of all things Irish. It is the one day of the year when everyone gets to be a little bit Irish, wearing the Emerald Isle’s favourite colour, green!
Please meet Lucy, one of our ESL instructors. Hi! I’m Lucy. I’m originally from the UK but now live in Canada. I’ve been working for GEOS Toronto since June 2009 and really enjoy teaching students from all different nationalities and backgrounds. I majored in French and German in university and spent time studying, working, and living in France, Germany and Australia before moving to Canada. My own life experience and passion for learning and teaching languages help me to understand the needs of the students and how they can integrate into life in a new country!
Every month students at GEOS – Toronto have many opportunities to practice their English outside of school. In March, our volunteering students raised money for charity while selling 50/50 tickets at sporting events. Students attended 2 NHL hockey games as well as a Raptors NBA game. Students have the opportunity to help out a great organization, practice their English and watch a national sports team from the press box. Volunteering with GEOS Toronto is always a great time!
GEOS Toronto hosted another fabulous International Potluck Lunch. Students and teachers alike contributed a wide array of cultural dishes. The Middle East, Asia, Europe and South America were all well represented in tasty treats.
Do you notice a colour theme? Yes, it’s GEOS Toronto celebrating St Patrick’s Day. Staff and students donned green wear to celebrate Toronto’s Irish heritage.

Currently we have 16 Nationalities represented in the school among our 94 students. We extend a warm welcome to all the students studying English with us!

GEOS In my class there are students from Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Korea, Colombia, and Mexico. It’s a very international class. The atmosphere is very good. We often study and discuss in pairs or groups, and we can learn another cultures and attitudes. Every teachers are very friendly and look after each students. There are tests and presentations on a regular basis. It’s good for me to keep studying. They gave me advice about not only school, but also a bank account, cell phone, and another many things. It’s convenient that the school has computers and wireless LAN. The school is near downtown, so it’s easy to get around and you can go shopping and other things after school. School activities There are activities almost every day. The contents are varies, like sports, theaters, museums, and so on. These are good chances to make friends who are in another class. It’s also good that an activity fee is cheaper than to go by myself. The best one is a volunteer. At a volunteer, there are many chances to talk with a native Canadian, and it’s free! I attended several times. These were good experiences for me. CN tower is one of the best sightseeing spots in Toronto. The tower has not only beautiful view. There many things that we enjoy, like glasses floors that makes us hang off. The most impressive place for me is Niagara Falls! I’ve never seen such magnificent sceneries in Japan. You can see the falls much closer, if you get on a boat. Unlike the view from far, it’s very powerful. There were strong wind and splashes of water, like a storm, but I was really satisfied. Toronto Toronto is a very clean and beautiful city. The climate is little colder than Japan, but it’s much warmer than I think. I surprised that we can swim at Lake Ontario in summer. The city is very good for tours, because there many good sightseeing spots in the city, and NY and Quebec that has beautiful townscape that looks Europe are relatively-close. Hironori Shiari Japan
