Student Spotlight: Nicolas Martinez
Nicolas Martinez is just 12 years old, making him one of our youngest students, and he has the longest commute. Nicolas came to Canada from Colombia with his mother and brother and has been staying with his aunt all the way in Brampton. Every day he takes the bus to the school and arrives smiling and ready to learn. He didn’t take the bus alone when he was back in Colombia and when I asked him if he was scared of travelling by himself here he told me “I dunno, no.” A lot of people would complain about making such a long trip but Nicolas has been enjoying the adventure and tells me “If I go alone in Toronto it’s relaxed, it’s beautiful”. He has also become quite the Toronto travel expert, telling me “I know the whole city!”
Over the summer Nicolas participated in some of our summer camp excursions and tells me that Niagara Falls was his favourite – he loved it at night when it was all lit up. Even though he is surrounded by older students he has made lots of friends at the school who he excitedly tells me that he keeps in touch with on Instagram. Nicolas’ teachers have nothing but good things to say about him and if learning English was not already impressive enough he has also been studying German. So let’s all give a big GEOS Toronto shout out to our spotlight student Nicolas Martinez!
